Project Brief and Description:

We were delighted to be invited to negotiate the construction of The Ripple Retreat by It's Good 2 Give, a charity set up to provide practical support to children and families impacted by cancer.

Built on the southern shores of Loch Venachar, the retreat was superbly designed by The Kettle Collective to provide a safe and easily accessible natural and calming environmentthat would allow the families to enjoy some quality time together whilst they face the challenges that the illness presents.

The waterside location inspired the design concept for the retreat which features a rippling roof form, reflecting the undulating surface of the loch. This rippled roof moves from the waters’ edge, turns back on itself, and becomes a horizontal plane that wraps the living space.

The structure comprised strip foundations, structural steel frame, block substructure, a fully supported structural floor slab, elevations were completed in large expanses of curtain wall glazing with timber-clad infills, a curved rippled roof formed from I-Joists finished in a structural ply with a pigmento blue standing seam zinc roof which reflects the changing light reflected from the ripples over the surface of the loch.

The building is sustainable by design and specification. Low carbon energy is produced through the use of an air source heat transfer system that will provide heating and hot water to the building in a sustainable manner. The design of this building see that the internal spaces are naturally ventilated and elimaniates the need for any additional cooling.

It is fair to say that since completion, The Ripple Retreat has been very well received by all parties and most importantly the children and families that inspired the vision of Its Good 2 Give and we are pleased to have played our part to in delivering the project and supporting the charity which does fantastic work.

As will be understood the continued provision and upkeep of The Ripple Retreat means that Its Good 2 Give require to continue with their fund raising to support the retreat and you can assist with the fund raising by making a donation through the link below.
